Our modern world revolves around technology — especially smartphones. It’s almost impossible to get through a day without sending a text message, using your phone to navigate, or checking your work email from your device. Your child is exposed to smartphones early on, and may even find themselves using a phone of their own at a young age. They’re growing up with technology and, as adults, will likely use it more than any previous generation. This makes it absolutely essential to teach your child about cyber safety, especially on smartphones, from a young age.

Teach Your Child about Cyber Safety at Cyber City

We’re continuing to meet the characters in Cyber City, who will guide your child through cyber safety through fun rhymes and exciting antics. This high-tech town, featured in our upcoming children’s book, is filled with dynamic characters who work together to teach kids cyber safety. We’ve already met Digital Dan, the leader of Cyber City, and Padlock Picasso, who taught us about creating smart and safe passwords. Now, meet Savannah Smartphone, who loves to teach kids smartphone tips and tricks.

Meet Savannah Smartphone: Smartphone Responsibility Guru

Savannah Smartphone, who goes by Savi, takes the shape of a small, exciting smartphone. She comes to Cyber City to teach kids how to use their smartphones responsibly. This is an essential skill for young learners, who may find themselves using smartphones at home, in school, or even in unsupervised situations as they get older.

Savi shows the kids of Cyber City all the fun things she can do, like calling friends, playing games, taking selfies, and even playing music. She stresses that there are lots of things kids can do to take care of their smartphones and make sure they work well. For example, did you know it’s not a good idea to keep your phone plugged in for too long? Plugging it in overnight or for long stretches of time actually makes the battery wear down faster!

Savi also shows kids how to keep a smartphone from becoming overloaded. She reminds them that, even though there are tons of fun apps to download, it’s important not to download so many that the phone runs out of storage space. This will make it harder for the phone to run well and may cause it to slow down.

Savannah Smartphone is so excited that she can send messages to her friends, but she wants the kids of Cyber City to know that they have to be safe and appropriate for the types of messages they send. If they’re sending pictures, they need to make sure it’s okay with the other people in the picture first. Most importantly, kids must always use kind words in messages and avoid cyberbullying at all costs.

Savannah Smartphone wants everyone to know that while phones are great and can do lots of fun things, they aren’t toys. She reminds the kids that they need to take breaks from their phones to talk to their friends, read, and play outside!

Now that Savannah has taught kids that smartphones are only a small part of their lives, she’s ready to introduce her next friend, Appi Alex, who will give advice about apps. Stay tuned to meet Alex and more of his Cyber City friends!
