Who It’s For

Reasons Families Start Tutoring

A subject that stopped making sense

Often math or reading, and usually because a skill from an earlier grade never fully landed. Sessions go back to the gap rather than pushing forward over it.

Keeping pace with a demanding year

Students who are managing, but only just, and who benefit from weekly time with someone who can slow down and explain properly.

Homeschool support

Bringing in a specialist for the subjects you would rather not teach yourself, on a schedule that fits your week.

Getting ahead

Students who are already doing well and want to work above grade level, or prepare for a harder course next year.

What You Get

What’s Included in Every Plan

The same tutor every session

Your child is matched with one dedicated expert tutor, not a rotating pool. Consistency is most of what makes tutoring work.

Work aligned to their classroom

Sessions follow what your child is actually being taught, so tutoring supports school rather than competing with it.

Flexible scheduling

Book Monday to Saturday at times that fit around school, activities and family life.

Progress reporting

Ongoing updates from your tutor, plus a full written progress report at the end of the initial three months showing exactly what has changed.

Paying With ESA Funds

The Critical Thinking Child is an approved provider for Education Savings Account programs. ESA funds can be applied to assessments, tutoring, and test prep — though approved services vary by state and program. Check what your state covers before you enroll.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the three-month minimum work?

When you enroll you are committing to three months of tutoring. After that the plan continues month to month until you cancel. The three months are not arbitrary. Tutoring rarely shows measurable change in a few weeks – a student who has been struggling with fractions since third grade needs time to rebuild the foundation. Three months is long enough for that work to show up, which is why we deliver a full progress report at the end of it. You get a clear read on what has improved, what still needs attention, and whether to continue, change subject, or stop.

Will my child have the same tutor every time?

Yes. Your child is matched with one dedicated tutor and stays with them. It matters more than most families expect — a tutor who already knows how your child thinks, what they find hard, and what motivates them does not spend the first ten minutes of every session catching up.

How do you match my child with a tutor?

We look at the subject, the grade level, what the diagnostic or your description tells us about where the gaps are, and how your child learns best. Because tutoring is virtual we are not limited to who happens to live nearby, so we can match on fit rather than geography.

Can I choose more than one subject?

Each plan covers one subject, chosen at checkout. If your child needs help in two, get in touch and we will put a plan together and price it for you rather than having you buy two separate plans.

Do we need an assessment first?

Yes, for core subjects. We require an assessment before starting tutoring in reading, math, writing, science and social studies. Grades tell you there is a problem; an assessment tells you what the problem actually is. A student struggling with word problems may have a reading gap rather than a math gap, and without knowing that we would be guessing at where to start. Spanish is usually the exception – get in touch and we will confirm what your child needs. See assessment pricing.

Why are K-1 sessions shorter?

Thirty minutes is about as long as most five and six year olds can concentrate properly. A shorter session that holds their attention throughout does more good than a longer one they stop following halfway through.

Does tutoring follow my child’s school curriculum?

Yes. Sessions are built around what your child is being taught in class, so tutoring reinforces schoolwork rather than running alongside it as a separate track. If there are gaps from earlier grades holding them back, we close those at the same time.

What if we need to reschedule a session?

Contact us as early as you can and we will do our best to move it. A rescheduling or makeup fee may apply. Sessions missed without notice are not refunded.

How do I cancel?

After the initial three months, let us know in writing before your next billing date and the plan will not renew. There is no cancellation fee.

Do you offer group tutoring?

Not currently. Subject tutoring is one-on-one only, because the whole point is a plan built around one child’s specific gaps. We do run small group courses for test prep, which is a different kind of work — those are on the test prep hub.

Can I use ESA funds for tutoring?

In most cases yes, but approved services vary by state and by program. Check what your state covers before you enroll, and get in touch if you would like help working out whether your program applies.

How soon will we see a difference?

It depends on how far behind the gap goes and how often your child attends. Confidence usually shifts first, often within a few weeks, and grades follow. Students on the eight-session plan generally move faster than those on four, simply because there is less time between sessions for things to fade.

Not Sure Which Plan Fits?

Tell us the subject and where your child is struggling, and we will recommend a starting point.
