Which Test

Which Exam Is Your Child Taking?

Chicago families face a different exam at almost every stage. Here is what each one is for.

Gifted & Classical

CPS kindergarten admissions. Gifted measures critical thinking and problem solving; Classical measures reading and math.

Academic Center Entrance Exam (ACEE)

Also called the Regional Gifted Exam. Determines admission to CPS Academic Centers for 7th grade entry.

HSAT/PreACT 9 Secure

The CPS HSAT is now the PreACT 9 Secure. This high school admissions test, taken in 8th grade, counts for half the selective enrollment application.

HSPT

The entrance exam used by Catholic and many private high schools.

Enhanced ACT

College admissions. Illinois administers it statewide, so most juniors sit it regardless of where they apply.

Digital SAT

College admissions, now delivered in the shorter digital format.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which test does my child need to take?

It depends on the grade and the school. CPS kindergarten admissions use the Gifted and Classical exams. Academic Centers use the Academic Center Entrance Exam, also called the Regional Gifted Exam, for 7th grade entry. CPS high school admissions now use the PreACT 9 Secure, which replaced the HSAT in 2026. Catholic and private high schools generally use the HSPT. College admissions use the Enhanced ACT or the Digital SAT.

What happened to the HSAT?

The PreACT 9 Secure is now the high school admissions test (HSAT) for selective enrollment, and it counts for half the application. If you have been searching for HSAT prep, the PreACT 9 Secure is what you are looking for.

How many sessions does my child need?

That depends on how far the current score sits from the target and how much time is left before test day. The assessment answers this properly — it shows which sections need work and how much ground there is to cover. As a general guide, families starting several months out often do well with four to six sessions, while students with more to close or less time usually need eight.

Do we have to do the assessment first?

We strongly recommend it. Without a diagnostic we are guessing at which sections to prioritise, and on a package of four sessions there is no room to waste one finding out. If your child has recently taken a practice test or a school assessment and you have the score report, share it with us and we may be able to work from that instead.

How far in advance should we start?

Earlier is better, and the families who see the biggest gains almost always started sooner than they thought they needed to. Beginning several months before test day leaves room to build skills rather than cram strategy. That said, focused preparation in the final weeks still helps, particularly on pacing and test day approach.

Is test prep virtual or in person?

Virtual for K-8 and high school, available nationwide. In person for PreK through 1st grade at our South Loop and Bronzeville locations in Chicago. Older students are served virtually so we can match your child with the right specialist for their exam regardless of where you live.

What is the difference between 1:1 and small group?

Private sessions are built entirely around your child’s diagnostic results and move at their pace, and you buy them as a package. Group courses follow a fixed schedule with set start dates, and cost less per session. Group works well for students who are broadly on track and need structure and practice. Private is the better choice when there are specific gaps to close or a significant score jump to make. Group course dates and pricing are on the test prep hub.

Do the sessions expire?

Yes. Each package has a completion window — 30 days for four sessions, 45 for six, and 60 for eight. The windows exist because test prep only works when sessions are close enough together to build on each other.

What if we need to reschedule?

Contact us as early as you can and we will do our best to move the session. A rescheduling or makeup fee may apply. Sessions missed without notice are not refunded.

Can I use ESA funds for test prep?

In most cases yes, but approved services vary by state and by program. Check what your state covers before you enroll, and get in touch if you would like help working out whether your program applies.

Do you guarantee my child will get in?

No, and be cautious of anyone who does. Admission depends on your child’s score, the cutoffs that year, your tier, and how many families apply. What we can tell you is that 85% of our students receive eligible scores to top schools, and that preparation targeted at the right sections is what moves a score.

Not Sure Which Package Fits?

Tell us which test your child is taking and how much time you have, and we will recommend a starting point.
