Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons families book one. Schools set their own placement tests and rarely tell you in advance what is on them. The Academic Diagnostic gives you an independent read on your child’s grade level in math and reading, so you know where they stand before the school does — and you have time to close a gap rather than discovering it after placement. This is common for families moving from homeschooling into public or private school, and for anyone changing districts.

Without one, tutoring becomes guesswork. A student who struggles with word problems may have a reading gap rather than a math gap, and prepping the wrong skill wastes the sessions you paid for. The assessment tells us exactly where to start so every session afterward is spent on something that matters.

If your child needs help with schoolwork in a subject, take the Academic Diagnostic. If your child is preparing for CPS Gifted or Classical kindergarten admissions, take the Selective Enrollment Diagnostic. The two diagnostics listed above cover math and reading / ELA, which is what most families need. If your child needs something else assessed — writing, science, social studies, or Spanish — get in touch and we will tell you what we can arrange. Reading and ELA are assessed together as a single diagnostic rather than separately.

They test different skills because the schools test different things. Gifted measures critical thinking and problem solving. Classical measures reading and math. Families applying to both often take both, which is why the two are offered together at a reduced price.

The Academic Diagnostic is virtual and available nationwide. The Selective Enrollment Diagnostic can be taken virtually or in person — in-person is offered for PreK through 1st grade at our South Loop and Bronzeville locations in Chicago. Either way it is scheduled by appointment around your family’s availability.

Immediately after purchase you will receive a short form asking for your availability. Our team reaches out within 24 hours to confirm a date and time that works for your family.

You receive a detailed report showing how your child performed, which skills are solid, and which need work. We then walk you through it in a consultation and give you specific recommendations and next steps — which program fits, how many sessions we would suggest, and what to prioritise first. You leave knowing what to do, whether or not you continue with us.

No. The assessment stands on its own, and some families take it purely to understand where their child is. If you do decide to continue, the results shape the plan we recommend.

In most cases yes, but approved services vary by state and by program. Check what your state covers before you enroll, and get in touch if you would like help working out whether your program applies.

No. No program can guarantee placement into a selective enrollment school or gifted program. What the assessment does is show you exactly where your child stands and what to work on, so your preparation time is spent where it will make the most difference.
